Welcome to the Edmond Hoyle Home Page!

Edmond Hoyle (1672-1769) was the first English writer on the rules and strategy of popular games. He wrote about whist, backgammon, piquet, chess, quadrille and brag, as well as a book about probability. Books branded as Hoyle have been staples of gaming literature through the twenty-first century.

I have been collecting and studying the writings of Edmond Hoyle for decades. I am writing a book about the publishing history of Hoyle. I have made available three online resources, an online descriptive bibliogrpahy, the blog Edmond Hoyle Gent., and information about my publications.

A Descriptive Bibliography of Edmond Hoyle

The online bibliography includes descriptions of more than 300 editions of Hoyle. A user guide for the bibliography is here and a disucssion of conventions used in the bibliography is here.
